Nutritional Recipes for Underweight Teenagers

PURPOSE

WHO am I?

My name is Cammyn. I am a Grade 10 student from the Canadian International School in Singapore. We are currently undergoing a personal project at school, which is part of the IB Middle Years Programme. Essentially, this project is based on the student’s interests, resulting in a product or outcome. I chose to make my project about underweight teenagers and create recipes in hopes of helping them gain weight.

WHAT is it?

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there were over 340 million underweight children and teenagers in 2016. As this number continues to grow, the issue becomes more serious. The purpose of this blog is to spread awareness about this issue as well as share delicious, nutritious recipes for underweight teenagers.

What causes a teenager to be underweight?
It is difficult for teenagers to keep up with their energy needs, since growing teenagers require more food energy, therefore causing them to be underweight.
The reasons are as follows:

  • They are growing taller
  • Exercising frequently
    • They can lose weight when they are losing more calories than they are taking in
  • Too busy or distracted to eat appropriate meals
  • High metabolism

**However, it is important to take note that each teenager will experience different times when their weight fluctuates.

    Additional Information:
  • Teenage boys require 2,800 calories per day
  • Teenage girls require 2,200 calories per day
  • Big and tall teenagers who participate in physical activity require increased amounts of energy into late adolescence

WHY should we care?

Underweight in teenagers is a serious health condition with consequences for development, health and well-being. They are at risk of nutritional deficiency diseases, scoliosis, osteoporosis, pubertal delay and psychiatric disorders.

HOW can it be solved?

The best way to help an underweight teenager gain weight is to visit a dietician so that they can calculate the right amount of calories and macronutrients (carbohydrates, protein and fat) the underweight individual needs. However, following these healthy, nutritional recipes that include food from all food groups (grains, fruits and vegetables, meat and alternative protein, dairy) is a good start to obtaining sufficient nutrition.
